East Africans are expected to recall and honor the Tutsi genocide

Speaking during a public lecture on the 30th anniversary of the Rwandan Tutsi Genocide at Makerere University on Wednesday, Njoya advocated for the establishment of East African studies centers to make sure that the next generation prioritizes learning about their nation's past.

She claimed that ignorance of the history and conditions of Africans, and Rwanda in particular, feeds the genocide denial and racism that occurs on the world arena.

The fight against denial of the genocide and the memory of what transpired in Rwanda in 1994 both heavily rely on knowledge. She addressed an audience that included Joseph Rutabana, High Commissioner of the Republic of Rwanda, and Dr. Umar Kakumba, Vice Chancellor of hosts Makerere University. "We East Africans, should commit to learning each other's histories and having conversation among ourselves," she said.

Njoya outlined how imperialism has made it challenging for Africans to learn about one another's past. "The world's ignorance of Rwanda was one of the factors that made the genocide possible," she said.
