A man who survived two attacks by hippos was mauled to death in the third instance.
While caring to his property, Hassan Ssemugoma, 33, was mauled to death during the third encounter with the enormous aquatic beasts.
The victim, who was from Katonto Village in Dwaniro Sub-county, Rakai District, had twice before come dangerously close to death from hippo attacks.
However, Thursday was a terrible third instance.
The rising water levels in Lakes Kijjanebarola and Kachera, which have driven some wildlife from Mburo National Park into the villages, are blamed by the locals for the hippo attacks.
Local communities are at jeopardy as a result of the increased frequency of human-wild animal contacts brought on by this ecological imbalance.
Tragically, Ssemugoma's subsequent referral to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital resulted in him being declared dead upon arrival.
Twaha Kasirye, a spokeswoman for the Greater Masaka Police, advised the public to exercise caution and not to provoke wild animals.
He expressed his sympathies to the family of Ssemugoma and emphasized the importance of teamwork in order to prevent such disasters.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the police are working closely together to detect and control stray wild animals as part of ongoing efforts to solve the rapidly worsening situation.
