Kenya's top military official, Gen. Francis Ogolla, died in a helicopter accident

President William Ruto described it as a "moment of great sadness" for the nation during a press conference.

He had called an emergency meeting of the security council earlier.

According to Mr. Ruto, the collision occurred at 12:20 BST (12:20 local time). According to the president, an air investigation team from the Kenya Air Force has been sent to determine what caused the crash.

The crash occurred in Elgeyo Marakwet county, approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the country's capital. Mr. Ruto stated, “Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff.”

After holding the positions of Deputy Chief of Defense Forces and Commander of the Air Force, Gen. Ogolla was appointed by Mr. Ruto in April of last year.

Mr. Ruto praised Gen. Ogolla, who served as the president's top military advisor, as a valiant officer who lost his life while performing his duty.

"Our motherland has lost one of her most valiant generals, gallant officers, service men and woman," Mr. Ruto stated to the people.

On Friday, April 19, the country will observe a three-day period of mourning. According to Mr. Ruto, the flags of the Republic of Kenya and Kenyan embassies overseas would fly at half mast.
